Human menopausal gonadotropin (menotropin) is a preparation of the two pituitary gonadotropins — follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone — purified from the urine of postmenopausal donors, in which both hormones circulate at high levels. Introduced in the early 1960s, it became the foundation of gonadotropin research and reproductive endocrinology.

HMG holds a unique place in endocrinology: the first pregnancies achieved with urinary gonadotropins were reported by Bruno Lunenfeld and colleagues in 1962, and the 75 IU FSH + 75 IU LH menotropin vial became the standard unit of ovarian-stimulation research for the following decades.
Sixty years of published work have characterised its receptor pharmacology, batch composition and clinical performance, and menotropin remains a reference preparation against which recombinant FSH and LH products are compared in the reproductive-medicine literature.
